About
Bio
Hello there, my name is Joh. More than likely that name will probably mean nothing to you. My main online nick these days seems to be Kaph or Kapheroph. An odd name I agree but it was born from playing Everquest 2 and I kind of liked it, so it has followed me around to most places that I have registered on the net.
At the moment I am studying in the field of information security and software security engineering. I am also interested in personal information security and privacy laws and issues. How does this all tie together to form this blog? Social networking. Another major interest of mine is social networking, I have been studying this topic for a couple of years following trends and demographics. It has been interesting to see the shift in interest in users and developers and also marketers and malicious software developers.
On most days you can find me analysing malware, looking at packet logs, studying EULA or privacy policies or just plain studying.
Background
I have always been interested in computers for as long as I can remember….I think there are still old Apple Macintosh II, Vic-20 and a Commodore_64 systems laying about the place here somewhere. Ahh those were the days….
I eventually got into Linux and started messing about with configurations and bash scripting. I then started to learn about programming and got interested in how operating systems work. This undoubtably led towards hacking and cracking network services and software. I was a big fan of IRC but surpisingly I didn’t get caught up in the IRC wars. I realised then about the consequences of your actions. I was annoyed that people were DoS-ing each other and hosing network connections. I wanted to find a way to stop it…. although I never did. So I quit IRC for a while and concentrated on getting my Red Hat 2 system properly configured, my biggest problems at the time were getting my uberfast 28.8kbps modem to work and the all too common x11 configuration issues.
This brings me to current day, I missed a lot in between but it was all more or less the same. At the moment I’m studying to help protect people from malicious software, spam, privacy breaches etc. I’m also looking into where all of our information that we put on the internet goes, who is most likely to collect it and what they do with it. It’s a long road that hopefully doesn’t have an ending, not that I want all of these issues to continue, but rather I enjoy my chosen field as it is never boring.
